Limelight Completes Acquisition of EyeWonder

Limelight Networks purchased my employer (EyeWonder), and since Monday, EyeWonder (now: EyeWonder, a Limelight Networks Business) has been operating as part of Limelight Networks. What's changed? So far, not so much. I'm glad to be part of the LLNW team though!

openSUSE 11.2 on an HP Mini 210 1010NR

I recently acquired an HP Mini 210 1010NR, which is a modern Pine Trail netbook.

Specs:

Intel Atom N450 processor (1.66 GHz, HT enabled)
1 GB (1024 MB) RAM
160 GB HDD
10.1" LCD display (1024x600 resolution, fairly standard)
1.3MP webcam
HP Synaptics Clickpad
Broadcom 802.11g wireless
10/100 Ethernet
Intel HD graphics (3100 I do believe)

What works out of the box:

Most everything

What doesn't:

Wifi
Touchpad

Fixing things!
The install went fairly smoothly. I have an HP DVD-RAM USB drive which helped alot (it came with my HP Envy 15 laptop...). Once installed, wifi can be made to work on a clean install of openSUSE 11.2 by following these steps:

Connect to the internet via ethernet
Update the kernel-default package to the most current package. You can run zypper up or Yast Online Update or preferred update mechanism and just install all the updates as well.
Add the Packman repository
Install the broadcom-wl and broadcom-wl-kmp-default packages (must do both, or you will change your kernel to the debug kernel. Don't want that now...)
Reboot

Voila, you have working wifi

The touchpad is a bit more tricky, since its not really a touchpad, but Synaptics new ClickPad found in the HP Mini and HP Envy lines. While openSUSE 11.3 will fix this correctly, you can get it working by doing the following:

Install kernel-source, make, and gcc
Update /usr/src/linux/drivers/input/mouse/synaptics.c and /usr/src/linux/drivers/input/mouse/synaptics.h with the files in the attached zip: Desktop.zip
Using README.SUSE in the kernel source directory, configure, build, and install your custom kernel
Reboot
Voila, a working touchpad. No multitouch, but hey, like I said, openSUSE 11.3 will be working properly with this fancy touchpad.

My employer, EyeWonder, is being purchased by Limelight Networks out of Tempe,AZ, a major Content Delivery Network. The stockholder meetings are April 28th for the EyeWonder stockholders and April 30th for the Limelight stockholders. Limelight plans to keep EyeWonder a separate operating unit for now, so my job is safe.

Apple is evil, Part 2

Apple just effectively banned 2 very good products for building (native) iPhone applications. Up until OS 4.0, these apps were perfectly fine, and you are probably using an app built using one of those 2 technologies already:

Adobe's Flash to iPhone compiler
Novell's MonoTouch
Unity 3D might be effected, but not quite sure yet

So yep.. Apple is evil.

Flash Player 10.1 LocalConnection performance problems

While developing the next version of our ad authoring tool, I noticed a major performance issue that will affect a lot of people that use LocalConnection .. LocalConnection is slow in Flash Player 10.1! AdWonder uses LocalConnection for several things, but its primary usage is for "logging". The ubiqutious EW.sendToPanel call in our ads, which sends text to the output panel, now has a noticeable delay from when you send the command in the ad until it hits the output panel. This isn't just me, Tinic Uro from Adobe has confirmed this in his blog posting: There's not an approximate 33ms delay from when the call is made until its processed in Flash Player 10.1!

Man vs Food

I just watched several episodes of this TV show called Man Vs Food. This crazy guy basically goes to all of these different places and faces a local eating challenge. Tonight, I saw him do the following:

Attempt to eat 8 breakfast burritos from this place in Austin, TX (he lost this one)
Finish a 72 oz steak dinner from this place in Amarillo, TX (72 oz steak, salad, baked potato, and a dinner roll). Amazingly enough, he still looked like he could eat more after this!
Eat 2 gallons of ice cream from this place in San Fransisco, CA
Eat 10 sushi roles of various spiciness from this place in Charleston, SC and ace it.

Apple just announced the Apple iPad, which is essentially an enlarged iPod Touch (or iPhone). Anyone else notice the similarities in the name between iPad and HP's iPAQ (which has essentially the same target market)?
